What is BigCoin

Bitcoin is a digital asset and a peer-to-peer transaction network. Understanding how the network records activity is different from predicting the market price of the asset. This overview makes that distinction and corrects claims that Bitcoin is automatically anonymous, instant or risk-free.

A network record is not a price forecast

The blockchain records transactions under the network’s rules. A market price describes what people are willing to exchange for the asset at a particular time. A transaction record does not explain every market movement or prove what the next price will be.

The earlier version of this article described a price surge without a clear measurement period and treated future appreciation as a benefit. Those claims have been removed. A dated price observation would need its source, currency and time interval; none should be presented as a guaranteed direction.

Bitcoin is not inherently anonymous

Bitcoin.org’s safety notes explain that transaction records are public and that an address can become associated with an identity. Pseudonymous addresses are not the same as guaranteed anonymity. The same guidance warns that Bitcoin’s market value can change sharply.

Confirmation is different from service completion

The network and a business using it can have separate status labels and processes. Bitcoin.org notes that confirmation timing varies and that a Bitcoin payment does not have a conventional central reversal mechanism. It is incorrect to promise that every transaction is immediately completed everywhere.

A service may also apply its own policies or checks. A blockchain record does not, by itself, establish that a merchant has credited an account or approved another action. This page does not confirm WABO support for Bitcoin or give deposit and withdrawal instructions.

Custody changes the responsibilities

Control of a wallet and access to a service account should not be confused. The wallet-storage guide explains custody, backups and recovery limitations. A technology description is not an endorsement of an exchange, wallet vendor or payment destination.

Keep separate risks separate

Asset-price risk, account-security risk and gambling risk are different issues. A gain in one context does not cancel a loss in another, and familiarity with a network does not make gambling outcomes predictable. This article does not recommend investing, transferring funds or participating in gambling. Never use essential money or borrow to chase a loss.
