Discover the Exciting World of Hold and WinSlots

Hold and Win, Hold and Spin and similar names describe families of slot features in which certain symbols remain in place while other positions are resolved again. The name is not a complete rulebook: the trigger, counter, symbol values and ending conditions depend on the individual game.

This explainer separates the general concept from a specific example. It does not rank games, confirm WABO availability or predict the chance of reaching a feature.

What is held, and what changes?

A held or locked symbol remains in its position during the relevant feature. Other positions may be resolved again, and the game’s rules determine whether additional symbols are held. A counter may track remaining respins, but its starting value and reset conditions are not universal.

Read the symbol legend as well as the feature name. A scatter, a money symbol and a wild can serve different roles in the same game. The wilds and scatters guide explains why those labels should not be treated as interchangeable.

A concrete example without a universal rule

Pragmatic Play’s official Wolf Gold description distinguishes its scatter-triggered bonus from the Money Respin feature. The latter begins when six or more money symbols appear in the base game and starts with three respins. That description concerns Wolf Gold; it should not be copied into another title’s rules.

A documented example does not establish that a game invented the entire mechanic, that all providers use the same design or that a particular operator currently offers it. Those are separate claims requiring their own evidence.

Check values and ending conditions

When reading a feature explanation, identify the qualifying symbols, which positions remain locked, what changes the counter and how the feature ends. Check whether displayed numbers are currency amounts, multiples or labels. Do not infer a cash value from an icon without the accompanying explanation.

A completed illustration shows one possible sequence. It does not reveal how often that sequence occurs or what another session will produce. A large advertised maximum likewise describes a limit, not a typical result.

The feature name does not establish RTP or odds

There is no single RTP or house-edge figure that can be assigned to every game bearing a Hold and Win label. Use the exact game’s published information, including its version and settings. The paytable guide distinguishes rules, RTP and volatility.

Britain’s Gambling Commission explains that RTP is a long-run measure; on random machines, previous results do not change the odds of the current game. This is a general explanation, not a statement about any site’s licence or a guarantee of an individual return.

Keep feature descriptions in perspective

Understanding the display cannot make a random outcome predictable. Claims that a feature is easy to trigger, due to appear or a route to reliable profit need evidence and should not be inferred from its name. Gambling can result in losing the full amount spent. It is only for eligible adults where permitted; never borrow or chase losses.
